Each month, Friends of Residential Treasures Los Angeles (FORT: LA) curates a new self-guided trail, inviting Angelenos to explore the city’s rich architectural heritage. These immersive experiences highlight significant homes, hidden gems, and the designers who have shaped Los Angeles' built environment.
This month’s trail is entitled Against the Grain: The Organic Modernism of Herb Brownell, celebrates five remarkable residences that showcase Brownell’s mastery of site-sensitive design, honest materials, and warm, livable spaces. Curated by architect Ron Yeo, the trail highlights both preserved and altered examples of Brownell’s work, revealing the challenges of protecting mid-century architectural treasures in rapidly developing coastal communities. From inventive solutions for “unbuildable” bluff sites to interiors wrapped in redwood, the trail offers a rich portrait of an architect devoted to creating homes of beauty, function, and enduring character.
